Anchorage monthly unemployment remained unchanged at 5.6 percent from February to March 2015 and compared year-to-year, March 2014, according to the latest employment report released by the Anchorage Economic Development Corp. sponsored by First National Bank Alaska. The rate equals the national monthly unemployment rate, yet remains well below the statewide rate of 7.5 percent.
“We’re encouraged to see an increase in the labor pool, people seeking jobs,” said AEDC President and CEO Bill Popp. “We have more people working and more people looking for work, which is a good sign for Anchorage businesses.”
Year-to-date Anchorage has 153,100 jobs, 267 fewer at the end of March 2015 than it did at this time last year, coupled by an increase of 1,080 people seeking employment. Private and federal jobs have decreased by 200 and 133, respectively, while local government jobs have increased to provide a net gain of 133 government jobs. Health care, oil and gas and retail sectors each demonstrated some growth. Job number declines were found in transportation, leisure and hospitality and construction; while professional and business services job numbers remained static.
