Housing Area of Focus presented to the Anchorage Assembly on April 24 highlighting the challenges and providing recommendations for improvements. The Assembly noted the concerns and is responding positively to consider changes to the current policy, regulations and procedures. Two more hearings will be conducted by the Assembly in June to better understand the concerns and respond to them appropriately.
When asked through a Business Confidence Index survey about whether a lack of available and affordable housing in Anchorage is an impediment to attracting and retaining employees, more than 60% of AEDC member companies responded in affirmative. The response has been consistent over the last three years.
This Area of Focus has undertaken the following initiatives to respond to this issue:
- They have conducted employees’ and employers’ surveys and gathered useful data on what challenges companies are facing in hiring and retaining employees and sought what type of housing and neighborhoods are preferred by the employees;
- They developed a set of regulatory and financial recommendations for the policy makers and other stakeholders; and
- They are actively engaging with the Anchorage Assembly and highlighting the regulatory challenges and their impact on housing development.
- They emphasize the need for redevelopment, high-density and other elements of modern and future driven housing development that will create more vibrant neighborhoods in Anchorage. They are actively working with the stakeholders to address the issues and making sure that there is a balance between supporting development and protecting and preserving community values.
