Anchorage March 2017 unemployment rate sees little change

This March, unemployment in Anchorage was at 5.8 percent, a 0.1 percent increase from February, according to the latest AEDC Employment Report co-sponsored by First National Bank Alaska and Alaska Communications.

With this latest figure, the 2017 year-to-date Anchorage unemployment rate remains at 5.7 percent. These numbers are higher than the national rate of 4.5 percent and below the statewide rate of 7.2 percent.

Employment in the Anchorage Educational & Health Services now appears to be moderating, with 300 (+1.5%) more jobs over 2016 YTD. The Oil & Gas sector YTD job total shows 700 (-21.9%) fewer jobs so far this year compared to 2016 YTD. Statewide, Oil & Gas industry YTD employment is down 2,700 jobs (-21.1%) compared to the same period in 2016. The Government jobs monthly average in Anchorage is down 300 jobs YTD from 2016. Federal Government positions are down 200 (-2.3%).
