World Intellectual Property Day
The University of Alaska Anchorage and the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation, together with the United States Patent and Trade Office would like to invite you to participate in an exciting event – the first World Intellectual Property Day at UAA. It will be held from 12:30-7:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 3 at the UAA/APU Consortium Library, room 307.
World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated each year with a variety of events and activities in cities worldwide. It aims to increase people’s awareness and understanding of the importance of intellectual property. Come learn how intellectual property impacts ideas in today’s culture and economy. Hear from local and national experts on how to protect your ideas, designs and business and what can happen if you don’t. Hear success stories from local entrepreneurs and startups and learn what it takes to attract investment.
The theme of the event at UAA will be “Beyond Commodities – Transformation through Innovation,” which will fit into USPTO’s theme for this year, “Digital Creativity: Culture Reimagined.”
The agenda will include:
- Remarks from Mayor Berkowitz and Governor Walker
- Speakers and Panelists from the USPTO, venture capital firms, angel investors, entrepreneurs and corporate leaders.
- A contest for “Innovative Ideas” with prizes for: Most likely to Succeed, Best Idea for a Global Marketplace and Best Contributor towards Transforming the Alaska Economy
- The finale will be a dinner at UAA’s Lucy Cuddy Fine Dining Room where the Innovative Idea awards will be presented. A new inventor will also be inducted into the UAA Patent Wall of Fame, followed by a discussion with the audience and representatives from the USPTO.

This contest will be a public disclosure of information. Therefore, if participants are not protected by a patent pending, they will have one year from the date of this event to secure one.
