Let’s Talk Anchorage: Community Planning for Our Economic Future

Anchorage, it has been a wild few years. From a new millennium(finally with flying cars) to global disruptions like COVID, our city has navigated its fair share of changes and challenges. Through it all, one thing remains clear: people in Anchorage need to talk, be heard, and actively shape where our community is headed. With many voices, comes many ideas, and as one of the most diverse cities in America, we need to work together to ensure all voices are heard.

That is where the Anchorage Economic Development Corporation (AEDC) hands the bullhorn to you — business owners, investors, students, lifelong Alaskans, newcomers, and military families alike. Anchorage stands at a pivotal economic turning point, and a shared community input is essential to defining our path forward. We are getting the word out, through our Economic Trends report, August Economic Luncheon, focus groups, and the recent CEDS presentation to the Anchorage Chamber of Commerce, AEDC has worked hard to inform the people of Anchorage. We are just getting started. We still need you.

Your Bullhorn: CEDS, What is it?

The Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) is a federally recognized, locally driven 5-year roadmap designed to guide regional economic growth, resiliency, and diversification. Led by AEDC for over two decades, a successful CEDS unlocks vital federal grants (such as EDA infrastructure funding) and aligns more than 250 local business and community partners around a unified agenda. It takes voices from all stakeholders and works to define a combined, thorough plan for our community.

Why Now?

Anchorage is poised to absorb major economic investments and structural progress, in AEDC’s 2026 Anchorage Economic Trends Report we report key economic factors of future changes:

Where We Need a Plan

Capturing these opportunities requires directly confronting persistent regional headwinds:

  • Housing & Cost of Living: Anchorage sits ~28% above the national cost-of-living average. The average home price reached $481,400 in early 2026, and JBER faces a housing deficit projected to reach 3,500 homes by 2030.

  • Workforce Shortages & Migration: The working-age population contracted 8.9% between 2015 and 2025, driven by net outmigration in 11 of the last 12 years and a 64% drop in the natural birth surplus. 52% of local businesses report chronic labor shortages.

  • Business & Growth Barriers: Elevated utility costs, energy supply uncertainty in Cook Inlet, deferred infrastructure maintenance, and public safety remain top concerns for local enterprises.

Strategic Opportunities

By engaging community stakeholders, the CEDS framework focuses on converting these investments into long-term vitality:

  • Targeted Infrastructure Investments: Directing federal funds to resolve operational bottlenecks, upgrade roads and ports, and support housing diversity.

  • Talent Attraction & Quality of Place: Expanding childcare capacity, improving public safety, and enhancing downtown amenities to retain young professionals and military families.

  • Industry Alignment: Connecting local trade apprenticeships directly to JBER construction projects and fostering entrepreneurial growth.
