The May employment report showcases several interesting trends, both month to month and year over year.

  • The unemployment rate is at a lean 3.5% which is even lower than the 3.7% rate at this time last year.
  • 3,400 new jobs were gained from April to May, tracking the seasonal trends that happen each summer with tourism and construction booms.
  • The total employment is down 400 jobs from last year, while statewide employment remained practically flat, pointing to the fact that Anchorage’s economy is not in step with the rest of the state
