Anchorage Employment Report: October 2024
Year over year (YOY), Anchorage’s October estimated jobs increased by 2.9% to 154,600 with impressive growth in: Construction (20.5%, +1,700), Health Care (6.5%, +1,400), and Leisure & Hospitality (5.5%, +900).
Month over month (MOM), total Anchorage jobs decreased by an estimated 1.3% (-2,000 jobs), following seasonal trends.
Anchorage’s unemployment rate rose to 3.6% in October 2024, reflecting a 0.2% increase from September—the largest September-to-October rise in the past decade.
Estimates indicate that the labor force grew by 403 people, but this increase was driven largely by a rise in unemployed people. While the number of employed persons increased modestly by 120, the number of unemployed individuals increased by 283, accounting for the rise in the unemployment rate.
This pattern suggests that more people are actively seeking work, but not all are finding employment, which is consistent with end of summer seasonal positions.
